Charities lose on average £15,000 a year in lost donations because fundraising emails are blocked.
One of the most common questions I get asked is “How can I get my emails out of the spam folder?” and unfortunately there’s not one answer – but I’ve got some a few tips you can implement right now to reduce the chance of getting blocked.
of all emails sent globally is spam
The reason you should cut down on the image heavy emails is that the spam filters can’t read the pictures. If there are too many, it’ll think you’re trying to bypass the spam filter by writing in an image where it can’t read it and shut you down.
Only spammers put more than about 5 or 10 links in an email and more than that might trigger a filter.
lost productivity because of spam
If you open with “Hi Dave,” and the reader is actually called Dave, the spam filter will think “This probably isn’t spam as Dave has given them his name AND his email address.”
Don’t overdo it though; it can come across as creepy. Or like you’re trying to get Trump’s attention. The Hill: Security officials include Trump’s name as often as possible so he reads memos
There are arguments on both sides about what you should call a regular email update. Should it be a newsletter, weekly wipe, round up, Monday Motivation, the list goes on.
Branding wise, call it what you want, but in the footer at the bottom say something like “You’re receiving this newsletter because you asked for our weekly email marketing tips” and the word ‘newsletter’ is very beneficial.
A spam filter is a machine and it will read the email to make an educated guess whether it’s legit or if it’s spam. It picks out words that sound spammy and tallies up a score. If you use too many words like ‘free’, ‘investment’ or ‘pharmaceuticals’ you’re likely to end up in the bad place.
Each filter has a different setting as what score will trigger it, but you can use a free tool like SpamAnalyse.com that will advise on the best ways to improve your score.
